Interactive Teaching in the Classroom

There have been several studies on the impact interactive technologies have on student learning. Following are some excerpts with links to the full document:

Interactivity in a Classroom Environment "The students were asked to express their reaction to the interaction and feedback provided by the student response system. A scale of 1 to 7 was established to compare the conventional Q & A approach to the student response unit approach. A value of "4" was designated to represent an equal attitude and feeling between the two classroom approaches. A rating of 1 would be a strong vote for conventional Q & A while a rating
of 7 would be a strong vote for the new student response system. Ratings in between these values would be graduated towards those indications but to lesser degree. The results were a 6.6 out of 7 in favor of student response systems."

Using Wireless Keypads in Lecture Classes "we find that when keypad scores count for greater than 15%
of the term grade, there is a dramatic improvement in attendance that reaches the 80-90% level and, in addition, the students make genuine attempts to prepare for the reading quizzes and remain alert throughout the lecture period.
The use of keypads dramatically changes the typical one-way interaction between teacher and student in a short time and is a powerful learning tool for the instructor. It has also achieved our goal of greatly increasing the participation of students
in the lecture class."

Enhanced student learning in the introductory physics laboratory "By comparing student performance on pre- and
post-tests in two laboratories that used this technique and two that did not (the control group), our data indicate that this modification substantially increases student learning (increases the average student learning gain from pre- to post-test by 50–100%)."
